Posted by admin on February 8, 2010

Medicinal marijuana is finding its way into many areas of medicine. It#8217;s a big help for some people with AIDS, providing them with a much-needed appetite. Marijuana is helpful for some people with cancer, helping them manage their side effects, and it#8217;s also been found to help people with glaucoma, just to name a few.
There was hope that medicinal marijuana would provide help for people with Alzheimers because earlier animal studies had shown that marijuana could reduce the plaques in the brain that are the hallmark of Alzheimers.
Although this new study, from the University of British Columbia, is also an animal study, it was done with mice, which are considered to be a better match for human studies, while the previous ones were done on rats.
The researcher used the same meth…

Avoiding Chemotherapy Side Effects

Posted by admin on February 2, 2010

Filed under: Cancer CaregiversAfter passing a bill that allows marijuana use for medical purposes, New Jersey is the fourteenth state to have legalized its use.
Although the federal government still regards marijuana as illegal, it is becoming a popular drug at the state level.

What most people don’t realize is that a synthetic version of marijuana is already legal and available by prescription in all states. Marinol, a synthetic THC, received FDA approval in 1985.

Doctors who prescribe the drug generally use it to treat chemotherapy side effects like nausea and vomiting, among other conditions.

If you don’t live in a state that allows marijuana to be used for medical purposes, there are other ways to curb side effects. Before starting chemotherapy, make sure that you have a friend o…

With L.A. Crackdown, Medical Marijuana Pendulum Swings Back

Posted by admin on January 27, 2010

Over the past few years, hundreds of loosely regulated medical marijuana dispensaries cropped up in Los Angeles. It got to the point where even some backers of medical marijuana in New Jersey saw California#8217;s experience as a cautionary tale, and promised that their law would be more restrictive.
Now, even in L.A., the pendulum is swinging back toward a less permissive system. The city council passed an ordinance yesterday that caps the number of marijuana dispensaries at 70, and limits where the shops can be set up #8212; though roughly 150 existing dispensaries that registered with the city clerk before 2007 are likely to be allowed to stay open under an exemption in the ordinance, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Even with that exemption, the number of shops could fall significantly…

Medical Marijuana Possession Limits Struck Down in California

Posted by admin on January 22, 2010

California#8217;s state Supreme Court threw out a law that limits how much medical marijuana patients can possess. Here#8217;s the court#8217;s ruling, which was filed yesterday.
The ruling is noteworthy in part because California already had some of the most permissive medical marijuana rules in the country; as we noted recently, the backers of New Jersey#8217;s new medical marijuana law were eager to point out that the drug would be more tightly regulated in their state than in California.
The state#8217;s legislature had passed a law that said patients could have up to eight ounces of dried marijuana could grow as many as six mature or 12 immature plants, the Los Angeles Times says.
But the original measure, passed by voters, didn#8217;t include those limits. The LAT says the leg…

Medical Marijuana: Research, State Law and the Feds

Posted by admin on January 19, 2010

To no one#8217;s surprise, Jon Corzine signed New Jersey#8217;s medical marijuana bill into law yesterday, on his last day on the job as the state#8217;s governor.
That makes 14 states that have legalized medical marijuana. But as both the WSJ and the New York Times note this morning, research into the medical uses of the drug remains rather limited.
That#8217;s partly due to the fact that it#8217;s not easy for researchers to study the drug, the NYT suggests. The article cites the case of a University of Massachusetts researcher who has been trying for nine years to get federal approval to grow and study marijuana plants but has yet to be allowed to proceed, despite a favorable ruling from the D.E.A.#8217;s administrative judge. (The D.E.A. says it follows the lead of the National I…
